What’s this? Reviewing a demo? Why? Because this demo is already the greatest Batman video game experience ever. And it’s just a demo!!!!!!
To place this praise in context, I believe the last I considered a Batman game to be fantastic, I was playing it on a Commodore 64. That’s how long and dismal the wait has been
So, in bullet point form, here’s what good this demo (which will hopefully be just as good, if not better, in the final product)
- The Visuals – Arkham Asylum looks great, with a nice mix of classic gothic design and modern tech. If I have to get a little picky, some of the Batman shadows were a little pixelated.
- The Combat – Hand to hand is smooth, flowing and violent, feeling exactly like Batman should feel in combat. And best of all, it’s non-lethal. Again, exactly how Batman should feel.
- The Tech – Hopefully, there’s more to be seen as the game progresses, but what is on display in the demo (Detective mode, batarangs, grappling hook) are simple to use and very well executed.
- The Voice – Kevin Conroy is Batman. Yes, that is the way it should be. Christian Bale may be the best movie Batman, but for my money, Kevin Conroy is how Batman should sound.
The actual game doesn’t come out for a few more weeks, but until then, the demo will continue to hold its place as the greatest Batman game ever.
