Mega Bloks Halo Cauldron Clash
Based on the volcanic area of the planet Requiem, the Mega Blocks Halo Cauldron Clash is the company’s first set inspired by Halo 4. That game not only kicked off a new trilogy for Master Chief and Cortana, but also introduced a brand new collection of bad guys, who make their first appearance in the Cauldron Clash.
Since this is the first set based on Halo 4, we not only get the expected UNSC Spartan Solider and UNSC Marine, but also the real show-stopper: the Promethean Knight. Towering over any other UNSC or Covenant figure, this four armed warrior (complete with built-in sword and gun) looks fantastic, and is sure to be a fan favorite.
Also included are a pair of dog-like Promethean Crawlers and a flying Watcher, who can hide beneath the Knight’s armor until it’s deployed. As in the game, the Promethean designs feel fresh and different from the Covenant and human forces, but unfortunately we’ll have to wait for Halo 5 sets to get even more Promethean designs.
Mega Bloks have done a good job with the Halo line of mixing functional play pieces (like vehicles), with sets that are better suited for display purpose only (the Battlescapes). The Cauldron Clash straddles the line between both camps, being equally fun for play or as a great diorama piece.
At 518 pieces, the Mega Bloks Halo Cauldron Clash is not a very difficult build, but it does take a while to put together because it uses a lot of smaller pieces. The structure itself, standing a foot tall, is made up entirely of grey and black pieces, with translucent red and orange pieces to symbolize the lava. There are also a pair of clear plastic rods to help the Promethean Watcher or the human figures fly through the air.
Clearly, the Cauldron Clash set should be a favorite with adult Mega Bloks collectors, but as with any of the Halo sets, it’s a little bit dicier when it comes to kids. While the set is designed for ages 8 and up, the game it’s based on, of course, is rated M for Mature and intended for grown ups. So while there’s nothing inherently wrong with this set for children, parents will want to at least think about what they’ll do if their youngsters start wanting to play Halo.
The GamerPops Recommendation
The Mega Bloks Halo Cauldron Clash set does double duty as both a playset and a display piece, making it perfect for Mega Bloks Halo fans of almost all ages (as mentioned above). The obvious highlight is the introduction of Promethean forces into your Mega Bloks Halo army, but the impressive design and unique look of the Cauldron make it a welcome addition to any Mega Bloks collection.
