Brave tells the story of Merida, a Scottish princess who doesn’t want to live the life expected of her. Rebelling against her controlling mother, Merida accidentally unleashes a magical curse, and must reverse the effects before it’s too late. Brave is also the first time that Pixar has created a movie with a female lead character, and the challenging relationship between Merida and her mother, Queen Elinor, is certainly one that many moms can relate to.
Brave: The Essential Guide is pretty much par for the course for a Dorling Kindersley children’s reference book, mixing facts and images across two page spreads. It’s a format that works though, providing easy-to-read descriptions of practically everything in the movie, at a reading level that’s appropriate for primary students, either on their own or with an adult.
The 64 hardcover-bound pages of Brave: The Essential Guide take your family behind the scenes of the fantastical kingdom of DunBroch. You’ll learn facts about Merida and her family, the other clan’s efforts to win her heart, and the demon bear Mor’du. There’s also a good, albeit simple, exploration of Merida’s emotional journey, and how she learns to take responsibility for her mistakes. Some of the facts even touch on real elements of Scottish history, which is a welcome addition not always found in these kinds of books.
The GamerPops Recommendation
Brave is a fantastic movie for the whole family, but especially for mothers and daughters. The Essential Guide from Dorling Kindersley is a nice read before, during, or after the movie, providing easy-to-read facts and details that complement the great adventure.
