Is Disney Epic Mickey 2 in development?

Epic Mickey 2 concept box art

This one’s been making the rounds the last couple of days, but has really picked up steam after Destructoid ran with it today. An online survey from Disney is pointing to the potential of a sequel for last year’s Disney Epic Mickey. Given that there are some specific details and multiple pieces of concept box art, it certainly seems likely that some work is being done on the game.

Disney Epic Mickey itself was a great idea that suffered from poor execution. Wii exclusivity limited the audience somewhat, and as a title that skewed towards core gaming, it was doomed to miss the mark with the casual-heavy Wii owning crowd. It didn’t do itself any favours with a poor camera system and inconsistent platforming. Still, it did a lot of things right, as well, and was family-friendly, though it couldn’t be enjoyed by the younger crowd as the controls were more core-based.

Still, if the online survey is any indication of what the potentially finished product will provide, we’re looking at major improvements. Support for not just the Wii, but the 360 and PS3 as well will maximize the potential audience for the game. Two player split-screen play (with Oswald the Lucky Rabbit) would bring another player into the action, which I thought would have been a nice touch for the original as my kids got bored of watching me play after a while. No mention on if they fixed the camera, though with all the criticism that they received for it, one would hope that would be a development priority.

This could be all for naught as there is no confirmation of Disney Epic Mickey 2, but where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire, and I would guess that something will come out of this. There’s just too much potential for this concept to have it marred by the issues of the first game, and hopefully the lessons learned from Disney Epic Mickey can be used to make a sequel that is truly deserving of the “Epic” moniker this time.
