A big part of being a responsible gaming parent is controlling content, but the other key is managing how much time your kids are spending playing games. Claudette Critchley, COO of Big Blue Bubble, has a great blog post about how she balances her family’s video gaming by having the kids earn time for games by completing chores around the household.
Here’s how it works. Every two to four weeks, as a family we come up with a list of tasks and categorize them as follows: daily or weekly, personal or household, individual or cooperative. The video game time associated with the tasks range from a simple daily task earning 5 minutes of play time, a larger weekly task earning 30 minutes, and a larger cooperative weekly task earning 60 minutes of time which is divided amongst them.
Definitely an article worth reading, and while I’m sure there are many families already doing something like this, the article has a great template that can be easily implemented by any family.
