10 Best Family Games of E3 2011

We saw a lot of games at E3 this year, and a surprising number of high quality family and child oriented titles. We’ve listed our top 10 favorite games here, and the best part is we could have easily done a list of 20 or more games. Not all of these will be winners when they are finally released, but here are the games that we judged to have the most potential for families.

10) Chase Mii (Nintendo)

Wii U Chase Mii Controller View

For your eyes only.

Yes, this isn’t really a game. But it was so instantly enjoyable and unique as a glorified Wii U tech demo, that it was one of the few games we got play that we absolutely wanted to have at home. Read More.

9) Cooking Mama 4 for 3DS (Majesco)

Cooking Mama 4 continues the recipe-creation minigame action of its predecessors, but is now making the jump to the 3DS exclusively. While the formula doesn’t seem to change much from previous games, the 3DS’s additional control options are brought into play to add some more variety. Read More.

8 ) Mario Kart 3D (Nintendo)

Mario Kart 3DS Glider

The hang glider is new in the 3DS version.

A tried and true classic that will remain just as enjoyable on Nintendo’s new handheld. The gameplay may not change in great leaps and bounds with each iteration, but that doesn’t make it any less fun. Mario Kart 3D introduces a few welcome changes, including the addition of hang gliding and submersible gameplay during sections of some tracks and the ability to customize your own kart. Read More.

7) Kirby Wii (Nintendo)

Kirby Wii

Given the adorable look of Kirby games (this one is no exception), and what was very simple to pick up gameplay, the drop-in multiplayer was the icing that sold the cake. We were kind of wondering if the official title shouldn’t be New Super Kirby Bros. Wii, because with the four player “co-op” and sidescrolling action, it really had the feel of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Read More.

6) Disney Universe (Disney)

It was hard to get a comprehensive take on Disney Universe based on the single level we were able to play at E3, but the promise of family-oriented multiplayer gameplay and a healthy mix of Disney and Pixar worlds feels full of potential. Read More.

5) Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure (Activision)

Skylanders Spyro's Adventures Gameplay

Activision’s toy-based platformer may be a pricy long-term proposition, but it’s definitely a unique offering, and we love the idea that characters can be taken from PS3 to Xbox 360 to Wii, and possibly even to PC. Read More.

4) Cars 2 (Disney)

Got a hankering for a some movie-based racing action? Cars 2 will more than fit the bill. It features racing that straddles the line between arcade and kart, fun arena combat, and a full range of playable characters from the movie.  Read More.

Not the most traditional family title per se, but Ratchet & Clank: All For One mixes cooperative and competitively gameplay perfectly, with a smart sense of humor and hilarious weapons. Great for families with lots of boys who will fight over collecting bolts. Read More.

2) Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster (Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment)

Double Fine’s announcement that they were making a Kinect-enabled Sesame Street game took everyone by surprise, but it shouldn’t be a surprise that this is a great game. Best of all, this is a game that will appeal to young gamers, male AND female. If we can criticize anything about the very good slate of family titles this year at E3, it was that there weren’t a lot of girl-oriented titles on display. Read More.

1) Kinect Disneyland Adventures (Disney Interactive Studios)

We were ready to dub this our favorite family game of E3 2011 the first time we got our hands on the game at Disney’s booth. When we revisited it later in one of Microsoft’s Kinect pods, any doubt was erased, as we got to see even more of the features that will make this an absolute must have. With 85 acres of Disneyland to explore, 40+ characters to meet, 12+ attractions to experience and a host of collectibles and easter eggs, there’s going to be plenty of content to keep the youngsters entertained.
