Ubisoft has announced a pair of new titles tying into this summer’s live action/CG film The Smurfs, bringing Smurf dancing to the Wii, while a more minigame focused entry will be released for the DS.
The Smurfs Dance Party lets up to four kids and parents dance with their favorite Smurf characters, including Papa Smurf, Brainy, Clumsy, Smurfette, and the villainous Gargamel, performing over 20 professionally choreographed dance routines to Rock, Pop, Punk, and R&B tunes.
The DS title looks to aim for a slightly younger audience, featuring minigames including cake decorating, performing in the Smurf Symphony, and dressing up with Smurfette, as well as reading and interacting with stories based on the movie.
Ubisoft has done very, very well with their recent Just Dance Wii series and a few other dance-oriented spinoffs, so The Smurfs Dance Party is definitely playing to their strengths, and may prove to be a smart alternative to the traditionally mediocre platforming-style tie-in. Not entirely sure how dancing would tie into the movie’s “Smurfs in New York” story, but if it’s fun, kids won’t really care.
Look for both titles this summer when the The Smurfs hits theatres.
