Yesterday, Konami announced that they would be releasing a video game tie in to the upcoming film Battle: Los Angeles. Normally, this sort of announcement would make me cringe, since games based on movies tend to be utter garbage, but this time I’m intrigued. Instead of going with the full featured game release that is common practice, Konami is making the new title available on the Xbox Live Arcade or PSN. A couple of movies have gone down this route, with mixed results. The Watchmen game was panned as a pretty terrible experience, while Scott Pilgrim’s digital release was quite good. The cheaper price tag for these types of games is quite nice, and while they may not be as deep and expansive as a full game, that allows the developers more time to really fine tune the experience during the rushed time frame movie based games require.
Now on to the game itself. It looks like your generic first person shooter, where you play a marine fighting off the alien invaders from the movie. This is all pretty vanilla, but might be just the thing for fans of the movie to relive some of their favorite scenes. I’m not always looking to pick up some incredibly deep and complex game, or watch a film like Citizen Kane. Sometimes I just want some mindless, popcorn crunching shoot em ups, which is why I’m excited to watch the film, which releases in a week. No word on price yet, but I would be amazed if it was over $15. There is a good chance I try this game out when it releases in April if I like the movie.
