PAX East Geek Parenting Panel

One of the panels I attended at PAX East was the Geek Parenting panel hosted by various writers from GeekDad.com and GeekMom.com. As self-professed Geeks “grow up” (something I refuse to do) and start spawning, it’s only natural for us to want to pass off our various forms of geekery on to our children, whether it be table gaming, video gaming, comic books, and other similar pursuits.

But what is appropriate for little geeklings in their formative years? Is Dungeons and Dragons really played by devil worshipers? (Seriously, that’s what my Mom thought growing up.) Should kids be playing Halo and Bulletstorm? What comic books are good starting points? These are the kind of things discussed during this informative panel, and from a video gaming standpoint, many of the games we’ve talked about were mentioned, such as the LEGO series, Toy Story 3, and driving games.  There were some others discussed (I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fascination with kids playing Halo games) as well, and the dialog was encouraging.

Like PAX East itself, the panel wasn’t just about video gaming, but in the interests of informing our readership, I wanted to bring to your attention GeekDad.com’s recent recap of some of the recommended table games, video games, and comics that they highlighted in their presentation.
