It looks like Sony really is dedicated to making first person shooters work on their motion controlled Move platform. This past week, they released Killzone 3, which can be played with either the Move system or with a controller. There is some buzz out there the the Move experience is actually better than the controller experience, but I haven’t had a chance to get my hands on it yet to confirm that. But Sony, it appears, has a few more tricks up their motion controlled sleeves. In addition to releasing Killzone 3, the company behind the PlayStation announced the SOCOM 4 U.S. Navy Seals Full Deployment Edition.
SOCOM was once the premier multiplayer experience on the PlayStation 2, and Sony is looking to recreate that success on their Move platform. Bundled with a regular edition of the game, the Full Deployment Edition comes with a Move controller, a PlayStation Eye Camera, a Move navigator, and a Move sharp shooter gun attachment for the controller. Buying all the pieces of this bundle separately would cost you about $160, so the $150 price tag is not that much of a discount. But is the bundle worth 150?
I would say no. This game is meant to be played online, and judging by past games with motion support, they simply don’t give you the sort of accuracy that a controller will give you. PC gamers are probably laughing at this, since neither controller or motion device will give you near the accuracy of a keyboard and mouse, but that’s neither here nor there. Plastic gun holders like the one included in the bundle tend to have a bad reputation for being gimmicky junk that gets forgotten shortly after purchase. And Sony, would it have killed you to include a headset? The thing holding the PSN from being as vibrant a community as Xbox Live is the lack of in game communication, and a squad based game like SOCOM needs voice chat. I could be very wrong about this, and this could end up being a great deal for people who are looking to get a Move, but I just can’t stop from feeling incredibly underwhelmed by this bundle. Here’s to hoping that I’m wrong!
