Halo HD in the works?

On Friday, Joystiq reported that Microsoft might be looking to release an HD remake of the original Halo, the game that launched them into the console industry. This game would use the exact same audio assets, but everything else would be upgraded. New engine, new textures, the ability to run at 1080p, online multiplayer and co-op for the first time; basically rebuild the 10 year old game so that it could compete graphically with today’s heavy hitters, but without taking away any of the magic that made the game so loved by gamers everywhere.

While not confirmed by Microsoft, 343 Industries, the caretakers of the Halo brand now that Bungie is an independent developer again, has been working on several projects. Fans have been clamoring for an HD remake of the game, and it seems like this could very well be one of those mysterious projects. I must admit, I myself am incredibly excited by this news. The Halo series is probably my favorite game series ever, and has eaten up more time than I care to admit. I have gone to every midnight launch for the game after the first one came out, and have read several of the novels. My friends call me obsessed, and they are entirely correct. Hopefully Microsoft doesn’t price this game too high, around $30 would be very reasonable, but regardless of the price, I know I will be purchasing this.

I guess I’d be curious to see if they’d stay true to the original, to reinvent the game and incorporate some of the gameplay improvements and enhancements that have come along since. I’d hope they’d update it, to make it something a bit new.
