E3 Impressions: Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned
While the Pirates of the Caribbean movies have made millions at the box office (with a fourth one currently in production), there is still plenty of room within this world of pirates and black magic for further adventures, which is why Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned is so intriguing.
An action-RPG title, Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned puts you in the boots of Captain Sterling in an adventure set not too long before the events of the movies. There may be some familiar faces popping up, but for the most part this will be a completely new adventure upon the Caribbean waters. Developed by Propaganda Games, Armada of the Damned looks to have you running, sailing, and brawling your way across numerous islands, solving numerous story and sidequests along the way. There will also be a heavy dose of naval combat in the game, though the developers were keeping that hidden at E3. Presume it’ll be fun and arcady, and I think you’ll be safe.
By far, my favorite part was during combat. In the demo we saw, the good captain had the standard cutlass and pistol, but he could also fling a boat anchor. Yes, a boat anchor on a chain. I’m always one to appreciate unique and fun weapons, and a boat anchor on a chain certainly qualifies.
Like so many games now, your choices throughout the game will affect your outcome. Will you be the heroic swashbuckler? Or dread pirate practicing the occult arts? Or will you fall somewhere in between? In the E3 demo, we learned making a good or evil decision early in the game determines whether you’ll be able to access one of the game’s most powerful weapons later on.
There are also some light RPG elements layered into the game, giving you some growth to your character, but not getting bogged down in hardcore leveling up.
Gameplay wise, it looked like your standard action-RPG title played from a third person perspective, with lush tropical backdrops and a slightly less realistic/more stylized character design. In the few minutes at E3, it felt a bit Fable-like in that regard.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned is still quite a ways off, with an expected release for the XBox 360 and PS3 in 2011 (perhaps in time for the next movie?). Argh.
