Why I’m (Cautiously) Excited about Backbreaker

If you’ve been following GamerPops for a while you’ll note that we’ve talked about Backbreaker before. For those unaware, Backbreaker is a football game that will use the Euphoria engine to create never before seen tackles. Due to EA’s agreement with the NFL, the game will not feature NFL teams or players,  but instead will allow the user to create their own teams and players. Here are the reasons why I’m looking forward to Backbreaker.

  1. Total customization: The logo editor for Backbreaker looks incredibly deep. You’ll be able to create your high school team, your favorite pro team, or even fictional teams from movies like Any Given Sunday or The Replacements. Creating a team of all-time Giants or Cowboys looks like it will be fun.
  2. Road to Backbreaker: This mode works similar to relegation in soccer leagues. You’ll start out in an 8-team league, and the prize for winning will be moving up to a harder 16-team league. Win that and it’s on to the 32-team league.
  3. Camera: Personally, I like the concept of an on-the-field camera. I know others don’t, but I believe this adds to the authenticity of the game experience.
  4. Potential: Between the Euphoria engine and the level of customization that the game seems to have, the potential is there for a game that can provide an alternative for those who hate Madden.

While there are some concerns, like the lack of fatigue or injuries, and how few details have been released about the “franchise mode”, there are reasons to believe in this game.

Backbreaker arrives in stores on June 1st for PS3 and Xbox 360, and will retail for $49.99. Check out the training camp videos below to get yourself psyched up.
