Capcom sets the stage for 2011 in a big way

While they still have a number of big name releases on tap for 2010, Capcom is already starting to reveal their plans for 2011 and so far, so good. At their annual showcase in Hawaii, called Captivate 2010, Capcom unveiled three new significant titles for next year, including one that fighting game fans have been hoping for for more than a decade.

First and foremost is the announcement of Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, an all new sequel to the cult classic that reappeared last year on the PSN and XBox Live. A fighting game featuring the casts of Capcom’s many fighting franchises facing off against the best that Marvel Comics has to offer. Whether this will revolutionize the genre, or be more like Street Fighter 4 and just give fans more of what they love has yet to be seen, but there will definitely be a lot of anticipation for this one. Frankly, this comes as a welcome surprise, but a surprise none the less, as you’d have figured the new Disney-owned Marvel might be holding on to its licenses even more tightly. Spring 2011 is the planned release window for Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds.

Another sequel that comes as a real surprise, is Okamiden, the follow-up to the critically beloved Okami. It’s especially surprising considering that developers Clover Studio closed up shop in 2006, and neither the PS2 or Wii version were best sellers at retail. But the concept and execution were fantastic, and the move to the DS seems ideal. In this sequel, you will play as Chibiterasu, a young sun god who uses the magical celestial brush to save his world.

Interestingly, Capcom is also forging ahead with a sequel to the updated version of the classic Bionic Commando Rearmed, rather than continue to the all-new version. The retro remake was a surprising hit last year, amidst the growing slate of old school revamps, and much like the Mega Man series, would seem to have limitless potential for sequels. Best news of all? Our Hero Nathan Spencer will finally be learning how to jump. You can jump onboard Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 in early 2011.
