On Tap: Week of March 29, 2010

Wow, really uneventful week this week. I’m not really sure what game to feature. The Modern Warfare 2 DLC Stimulus Package comes out this week for Xbox 360, but platform-exclusive DLC for a multi-platform title just irks me into taking it out of the running. WarioWare D.I.Y. for the DS is interesting, but I’m still not sold on the Content Creation sub-genre, mostly because I’m not all that creative myself, and somebody will just make giant penis levels eventually. So, for the heck of it, I’m going to feature Dead Or Alive Paradise for the PSP. Why?

Just ’cause.

Oh, wait, that was last week’s joke.

No, you see, last week, I made that awful joke regarding Just Cause 2, which was our featured game, and next thing you know, I find myself with a review copy. So, perhaps I can make it two straight weeks of getting a review copy of our featured game. Cause that’s pretty much the ONLY way I’d ever be able to justify playing DOA: Paradise to Mamajuice. And even then it’d be dicey.

I know, back to my old tricks of being late again. But this week I have an excuse, for once. Dealing with a death in the family, and I’m typing this week’s On Tap on a piddly little netbook keyboard at family’s, where there’s no Internet connection, let alone WiFi. Thankfully, with iPhone tethering and a hefty-enough data plan (yes, American readers, I don’t understand how the heck we got iPhone tethering before you guys, either), I can still get this out in a reasonable amount of time. Yay technology!

Speaking of everyone’s favourite fruity company, this iPad thing really has people whipped into a frenzy. I still have my doubts about it as a gaming device, unless you’re playing the right kind of game. Touch-based games, great. Games that really need a controller, huh boy. But that’s not stopping people from preparing games for the new device, bless their hearts, and their visions of dollar signs of course. The device becomes more intriguing as we approach release based on all the stuff you could do with it, even if it really is still an overgrown iPhone, stripped of certain functionalities. I would have preferred a full version of OS X as well, and not the iPhone OS (even if it is just a mobile version of OS X).

Finally, staying with Apple. Steam. On Mac. If nothing else, THIS is a big sign that the Mac market share is into “take notice” territory. These are the same folks (Valve) that won’t even develop for the PS3, for crying out loud! It’s great news for Mac enthusiasts who’ve had to virtualize or dual boot their machines, for the most part, to get their gaming on. I’ll be very interested to see how this develops over the next few months, with the service on track to be available in April. And it’s got nothing to do with being an admitted Apple fanboi. Nothing at all.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I must go pay my respects to the life-sized Steve Jobs poster on my wall.
