News Roundup – March 11

Green Day: Rock Band has been given a release date and pricing, with the game hitting store shelves on June 8 for the XBox 360, PS3 and Wii. The standalone 360/PS3 game will carry an MSRP of $59.99, with the Wii version priced at $49.99. A special plus version of the 360/PS3 version will feature extra tracks, special packaging, and the free ability to export the tracks for play in other Rock Band titles. The game will apparently not feature a hardware bundle, but will be compatible with all Rock Band instruments, some Guitar Hero instruments and some third party equipment.

PlayStation Home is getting a significant update this week, featuring a whole new top level navigation, making it much easier to find your favorite friends and locations. Best of all, this should decrease load times, which were one of the major issues I’ve always had with Home. Aside from the fact that it was boring and underdeveloped of course.

EA has let the world know that EA Sports Active 2.0 is in development, and will be available this fall for the PS3, Wii, iPhone and iPod Touch. Interestingly, the XBox 360 is not listed amongst the systems being targeted. Does this suggest that EA hasn’t figured out a way to make their fitness software work with Natal? Or perhaps simply that Natal won’t be available by the time the software launches. With EA Sports Active 2.0, players(?) will get results with new leg and arm straps with motion sensors, a heart rate monitor and a new online hub to store workout data.

Konami has announce The Cages, a new fitness-type game for the Wii based around baseball’s batting cage. The game will be filled with minigames focusing exclusively on hitting, with tests of hand/eye coordination featuring 19 different pitches. The Cages will also utilize the WiiMotion Plus to produce the most realistic experience possible. Though, as someone who has played enough baseball in real life, I’m not certain the WiiMote can ever really replace the heft and feel of a real baseball bat, though perhaps some ingenuity, a jigsaw and a cheap bat can create WiiBat. Patent Pending.
