Naughty Bear Preview
Have you ever watched Care Bears and thought, “What would it be like to terrorize an entire village of those cheerful freaks?” Come June, Naughty Bear from 505 games will offer you that opportunity.
Described by Lead Designer Ash Pannell as “Care Bears meets Friday the 13th”, Naughty Bear puts the user in the role of a bear scorned. Seeking to make amends, Naughty Bear comes to the birthday party seeking to repair his relationship with the other bears, only to be booted and scorned. After that, it’s on.
The idea behind Naughty Bear is to raise your naughty score high enough to reach the boss of each stage. You raise your score by terrorizing the other bears. In the level we saw, we watched as Naughty Bear took on the bear running for mayor. You have two objectives according to Pannell, “punish the main bear, and raise naughty points to raise gates.”
You can raise points in a number of ways. Killing bears is one way, but the best way to reach the multipliers is to terrorize the bears and wreak havoc on their village. I watched as Pannell disabled an electrical box and waited for a bear to come out and fix it. When he did, Naughty Bear shoved his face into the box, electrocuting him in front of another bear. This sent the multiplier up, and the bear scurrying for help.
At that point, the cops were called in. Naughty Bear set a trap and lay in hiding in the woods. The cop stepped in the bear trap, and Naughty Bear came out. Given the choice to kill the wounded cop bear or scare him, Pannell opted to scare him. This led to the cop yanking his own wounded leg out of the trap, raising Pannell’s score.
There are five categories categories of naughtiness: smashes and sabotage, shouts and scares, hits and maims, seen and heard, and goals and bonuses.
“Each bears has different behavior,” Pannell said. “Each bear has a certain amount of naughty points in them, when a bear has experienced more than they can take they go insane with naughtiness. You can then scare them into killing themselves.”
The game has 20 different weapons to use, ranging from guns to bats to swords. In addition to bears, which can not follow Naughty Bear into the forest, the game also features ninjas as foes to overcome. Ninjas display different characteristics from regular bears; they are faster, harder to kill, and can follow you into the forest.
The bears follow what Pannell described as an “unscripted A.I. They have knowledge of the world. They can get something to eat from the fridge. You don’t know where the bears are going to be when you come into a level.”
Defeating boss bears will reward you with different hats, which will reward you with different stats and animations. For example, you’ll be able to use ninja wear and disguise yourself as one. Kill a bear while dressed as a ninja will turn the bears against the ninjas, leading to them hunting the ninjas down. Users will be able to take their rewards earned in single player online.
While Pannell couldn’t get into specifics regarding online, he did say there would be some kind of multiplayer, with different modes, and leaderboards. A demo is also in the works, but there is no timeline for it.
Naughty Bear is due in stores in June, and is shaping up to the sleeper hit of the summer.
