On Tap: Week Of February 22nd, 2010

Quite the interesting week we’ve got going on. The big title that everybody will be talking about, of course, is the PS3-exclusive Heavy Rain. Early reviews are very positive for this experience and it remains to be seen if it creates a new genre, or at the very least inspires games of similar ilk. If it’s multi-platform goodness you’re looking for, then Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing drops as well for every platform except the N-Gage basically. Also, the Wii gets Endless Ocean: Blue World, the sequel to the first Endless Ocean game that apparently people were asking for.
I’ve been watching a lot of Olympic coverage this week, and aside from the rather disappointing performance of some of the Canadian favourites (I think “Own The Podium” can be officially called off now, folks) and the issues that the men’s Hockey team are encountering, a highlight for me was Shaun White’s performance in the Half-Pipe event. If you never understood how this kid got his own video game, you definitely got the hint after his gold medal win. After an amazing first run, nobody was able to top Shaun’s score, giving him the gold medal without him having to execute the last run. Basically, he could have slid down the middle of the half pipe, waving at the fans, and he’d still win. But after a brief conversation with his coaches, he decided to not only do a legit run, but one with an even more insane trick, which he nailed, and got an even bigger score for the second run. That was the mark of a true showman, and a true champion. Almost makes me want to buy his video game, except for the fact I’m not a fan of snowboarding or skating games, of course. Still, that’s the kind of stuff you like to see from a competitor.
Why is Bobby Kotick trying to play nice? He gave an interesting speech at DICE where he admitted to some mistakes he’s made, and almost seemed like he was presenting a kinder, gentler side to him. Of course, he was doing this in the wake of massive layoffs of various Activision studios, but the speech was surprisingly frank and honest. I don’t like it. He’s up to something. Sorry, Bobby, you are remaining in the GamerPops Hall Of Lame, so don’t try to butt-kiss your way out of it.
Finally, I picked up a PSP the other day. I figured I should have all the consoles so that I can provide the best coverage to you, our reader, that I can possibly give. Of course, Mamajuice wasn’t keen on me paying full price for one, so I trolled a local online classified ad site looking for a used system. Because, apparently, getting my PS3 from a 15 year old kid from Waterdown wasn’t enough of an experience for me. Well, I got one. From what I have a feeling was a single mom in her (very) early 20′s. Sorry, Sony. I guess I should be buying your consoles new so you can get the sales numbers, but then how would I experience the thrill of private sales involving situations that make me feel uncomfortable for doing what I’ve just done?
