3D Dot Game Heroes is perhaps the most unique title we’ll see in 2010, taking old-school pixelated sprites, and blowing them into three dimensions. While the gameplay looks to be *ahem* “inspired” by the original legend of Zelda, and the story is intentionally designed as a throwback to the classic days of 8-bit gaming, the visuals are undeniably intriguing.
While I’m definitely looking forward to playing this, I’m almost more interested in seeing where the game’s engine can go from here. Certainly, a whole host of other retro properties could be homaged, and you can certainly see the potential for 3D Dot Games to rival the LEGO games for all-ages accessibility and entertainment.
To add to the fun, the game will also allow you to customize your hero, because hey, it’s just pixels right? Change colours or change the shape completely, the choice is yours, and you can even trade your designs via USB drive. With that kind of editing power in the hands of players, I assume we’ll see some very cool designs shared on the internet, and we’ll get an even better idea of where 3D Dot gaming could go in the future.
For PS3 owners, look for 3D Dot Game Heroes from Atlus in May 2010.
