On Tap: Week of January 4th, 2010

Back in the saddle again for the new year, and what better way to kick things off with a bonafide AAA title in the much-anticipated Bayonetta. Witches, guns, over the top action, ultra-violence, partial nudity and sexual suggestiveness. And that was just the hype leading up to the game’s release, which has admitted been near-Brutal Legend in scope. However, initial indications are that this game might actually live up to the hype. So buy, play, and enjoy this game if you’re into this kind of game, but for the love of God, make sure the kids are in bed. Torture attacks, nudity, guns, etc. You don’t even want your kids even SEEING you play this game.

In my quest to clean up my gaming queue so I can get around to Uncharted 2, Assassin’s Creed 2, and now Bayonetta, I’ve been playing Arkham Asylum a lot lately (in addition to Castle Crashers, which I picked up during the big Xbox Live sale) and continue to be impressed with this game. I’m also getting a kick out of the fact that while I’ve been playing Batman: AA, Oldest Son has been playing Lego Batman. The two games couldn’t be any more different, even though they both feature The Dark Knight. Both are fantastic games, though, just in different ways.

There really isn’t anything of note this week for the kids to have a gander at, unless you want to try your hand at running your own fast food joint with Fast Food Panic for the DS. This should change, though, as we approach a big release season, with all the games that didn’t want any part of Modern Warfare 2 popping their heads out of the sand now. Of course, as the bills start coming in from the Christmas season, maybe you’re ok with the momentary lull.
