On Tap: Week Of January 25th, 2010

Ruh roh. It has begun. The big Q1 titles are starting to drop, hope your wallet is recovered from the holiday season. Since this is a big week for exclusives, and since we’re resolving to not be fanbois, we’ll let you take your pick of the soap opera in space (complete with doin’ it) Mass Effect 2 for Xbox 360, 256 players of M.A.G. for PS3, and No More Heros 2: Desperate Struggle for Wii, which will probably be awesome, and still sell only 5 copies. If I must choose, then in a move that will enrage Sony and Nintendo fanbois everywhere, I’ll pick Mass Effect 2 as this week’s feature, since I heard the original was pretty good.

So, love scenes from Mass Effect 2 are already making the rounds on the Web. Awesome. Isn’t this game going to do well enough without the controversy of freaky Hot Alien Action thrown in? At least you shouldn’t have to ask if you can play this game with your kids, though the scenes are fairly tame from what I’ve seen (check Kotaku’s article about it) aside from some space bra action (does one actually require a bra in space?). I’m sure some ultra-conservative nut out there, and/or Fox News, will get their panties in a bunch about it, but there’s more offensive things out there, like Ninjabread Man.

I played my first RPG game this week, as I’m tasked with reviewing Glory of Heracles for the DS. I actually didn’t find it too bad, and started getting the hang of things fairly quickly. I believe it’s one of the things that Nintendo wanted to do with this game, given the ample tutorial at the beginning. I’m still not sure if I get the appeal of the whole genre, but I found myself playing it quite a bit, and not feeling obligated to do so. Heck, at this point, I might just try Final Fantasy XIII when it comes out, which I would never have seen myself doing even as recently as a week ago. Just goes to show you what can happen when you try new things.

What’s next, First Person Shooters? Sorry Skiddz, one new genre at a time. :)

Apple’s got their big event thingy this week. The one where they debut the tablet that will no doubt change the world or something. But don’t look for me to tout how this could change the game for gaming unless they come up with something that blows me away and isn’t just an overgrown iPhone. (Relax, Apple fanbois, I own an iPhone and love the thing.) The iPhone isn’t a great gaming device, to me, because of the lack of control you have. Tilts, shakes, and on-screen buttons just aren’t the same, and only work with certain games. If the tablet is more of the same, it’ll get a big “meh” from this corner. Of course, it’ll do a lot more magical things that will make me look at it closer as a potential purchase, but NOT as a gaming device.

You left out MAG, Zipper’s 256-player shooter. Should be interesting.
