Metacritic's Games of the Year

The good folks at Metacritic (who we of course hope to join some day) have released their assessment of the best reviewed games of 2009, and the big winner is Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Which should surprise no one, as the outstanding game averaged 96 across the board. While many of the expected late 2009 releases were pushed back for a variety of Modern Warfare and non-Modern Warfare reasons, there was still a bumper crop of releases this past year.
The entire Top 10 list is as follows:

- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3)
- Street Fighter 4 (PS3)
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360)
- Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (Nintendo DS)
- Braid (PS3)
- Street Fighter 4 (Xbox 360)
- God of War Collection (PS3)
- Batman: Arkham Asylum (XBox 360)
- Forza Motorsport 3 (XBox 360)
While it wasn’t exactly an overwhelming “Year of the PS3″, it definitely looks like 2009 was the year that Sony finally got their act in gear and made this current generation a three horse race. The PS3 led the way with 10 titles receiving a score of 90% or more, and an average review score of 72%, the best amongst all consoles. Even the PSP did fairly well. No spectacular games, but a good number of solid titles, and very few bad games.
On the flip side, Nintendo, what gives? Out of an astonishing 362 games released, only one game scored over 90%, and that was the Metroid Collection, which hardly seems like it should count. Now, we all know the Wii is the home of shovelware and minigame collections, but you’d still hope that our of 362 releases, there would be at least one title worthy of top honours.
