On Tap: Week of October 5th
Do you hear that? It’s very subtle, but it’s getting louder. It sounds kinda like, money. Specifically, the printing of money. That sound can only mean one thing, Nintendo must be coming out with a AAA title. Well, AAA from a money-making standpoint. Yes, this is the week that Wii Fit Plus comes out to take your money. New exercises, more motion sensing capabilities. More things I won’t use my Wii Balance Board for. Sure, SOME people will highlight the NBA games coming out, or another Star Wars game, Afrika, or that South Park Tower Defence game (way to hitch on to the latest gaming bandwagon, guys), but you and I and everybody else knows who’s going to rock the sales charts this week. Plus, your kids might enjoy this. Especially if they’ve gotten chunky on you.
I was one of those people that got Wii Fit more for the balance board, figuring it would be a useful peripheral to have. That didn’t work out so well for me. Now I’m thinking it was more a thrill of the chase thing for me. Which may not bode so well for Nintendo. The Wii and Wii Fit were HOT sellers. Everybody had to have one. And supply was short. I’m starting to think the two things aren’t coincidental. Maybe short supply artificially increased demand. Now with the Wii in ample supply, sales are slipping. A conveniently-timed price cut may help, but I wonder if the market might be saturated now. I still think Wii Fit Plus will sell, based on lots of folks wanting the add-on. But how much longer will this be the case?
Greg gave me a hard time in our last roundtable because I was interested in Uncharted 2 when I hadn’t played Uncharted 1 yet. He’s right. So I took the copy of Uncharted I have from our Uncharted for Prince of Persia swap, and threw it in. Now I get what the hype is about. The game looks amazing (for a LAUNCH title) and is putting some present-day games to shame. Now I’m even more annoyed at developers who don’t make good PS3 ports. You CAN make a good looking PS3 game. Stop being lazy. The game has been great fun so far, and now I’m afraid I’ll have to finish it before I can get back to Batman just in case I want to grab Uncharted 2 on launch day, though with my queue of games I need to play, I might be able to hold off for a while and just ask Santa for it. Yes, I AM thinking about Christmas already. Sad, isn’t it?
I’m also mad at my cable company because high definition football and hockey don’t look ANYTHING like some of the games I play on the PS3. And I have a 720p TV, so you can’t make the 1080p vs 720p/1080i argument. Might be time for an antenna.
