On Tap: Week of September 7th

There’s actually a few interesting releases this week. Trine finally comes to the PS3. Raiden IV ships, making this Mortal Kombat fan wonder how I missed Raidens I through III. LittleBigPlanet gets its Game Of The Year Edition. Mini Ninjas invade a bunch of platforms (ok, it only gets a nod because Ninjas are awesome). And Dirt 2 gets to be overshadowed. But I guess we have to highlight the beast that’s coming on 9.9.9 in The Beatles: Rock Band. Rhythm game #2 of 245 to release in the next few months. Early reviews are indicating this will be a good one, but by having only Beatles songs, I wonder how well this will actually do, especially when you consider that the Beatles’s catalogue has been pretty much unavailable to the Digital Generation, who make up a large part of the audience for this genre. Are new plastic toy instruments going to be worth it? And 45 songs (when you’re usually looking at 70+ in a Rock Band game) doesn’t scream VALUE to me.
So, we welcomed a new Youngest Son (adorable little booger) to the world this week, which has introduced the expected chaos. Youngest Son has now become Middle Son (or perhaps, Frankie Muniz). And I’ve had no time for gaming, save for the odd dip into the iPhone, but even that was mostly used to time Mamajuice’s contractions. Yes, There’s An App For That. In fact, I haven’t picked up a controller since beating inFamous. That hopes to change soon, though. I might pick up the DS and play the new Professor Layton game. Oldest Son gave it a go, and quickly put it down in favour of Lego Batman because he couldn’t figure it out. Fair enough. I’m going to see what the fuss is about and let you guys know.
I can do this because Oldest Son just lost the DS again. We’ve determined that he’s just not mature enough to handle gaming yet. He gets too into it and ignores everything else going on. That’s not happening in our house. It’s too bad, too, because he was getting really adept at a four button control setup, and I thought it might have been close to time to introduce him to the PS3. I still might, because I can better control gaming on the PS3 and Wii. We’ll see. He’s got a ways to go.
Middle Son just turned 2, and he’s started to show an interest in gaming himself. He sometimes steals Oldest Son’s DS when he puts it down, and he’s shown interest in Oldest’s old Leapster. I’m not sure he, or I, are ready for this. Thankfully New Youngest Son is only 5 days old and has only figured out how to eat from the boob and poop a lot.
