On Tap: Week Of August 31st

Over Greg’s protestations (he really wanted me to pick the Williams Pinball Collection), I’m afraid I have to give the nod this week to a little game called Guitar Hero 5. You may have heard of the franchise. It’s the first of about 100 rhythm games coming out between now and Christmas. So break out the plastic toy instruments, or if you don’t have them yet, prepare to drop a bunch of money on plastic toy instruments, and get adequately prepared to ROCK!!!
Or wait for The Beatles: Rock Band and support Yoko Ono if that’s more your thing.
So, I finished inFamous for the second time the other night, as Bad Cole, on hard. Got the Platinum trophy as well. I’ll miss playing the game, but maybe not so much the grind that came with trying to Platinum it. 350 blast shards is quite a bit, and the stunts were a bit of a pain. But the game was a lot of fun, and getting a Platinum trophy always feels like an accomplishment. Too bad I stay up until two in the morning to get them sometimes.
Son #3 is due any day now, so we’re preparing for that. As a present from the new baby, Oldest Son is getting Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box. I thought this was a good idea for a DS game that had to be “educational” according to Mamajuice. Puzzles with some adventure mixed in sounds like a good thing. Then I read a review of the game that gave an example of one of the puzzles. It was more of a brainteaser than a straightforward puzzle. It wasn’t so much of a “One train leaves Toronto at 100 km/h while another leaves Montreal at 85 km/h…” as it was “how do you connect a 3×3 grid of dots with only three lines”. Now, having to think outside the box is a great thing that can help develop the mind of a young child. I’m just not sure if a kid can do that kind of thinking at 6. We’ll see, but I’m thinking the outcome will be bad either way. Either he game is too much for him and we wasted $35, or he figures it out, which could be really freaking scary.
